From Derek Eimer:
Well, looks like the wind has saved Happy Camp for now..could change in a minute..problem is......now the fire is heading through Doolittle creek...heading straight towards Elk Creek Campground....if it makes it over one ridge, they can fight it on hwy 96, if it makes it through that line and crosses over the Klamath river....well, lets just pray it doesnt....mandatory evacs up Indian Creek...and Josh has evacuated everyone from the campgrounds...Craig and I are staying to fight as long as we can..we are watering down everything in our area...but IF to much ash and embers start falling on us, we will be evacuating up to 5 mile bridge on Elk Creek...will try to keep everyone posted but if ya dont hear anything for awhile...we are BUSY!!!

Thanks for the heads up Derek and Craig. That looks like a monster fire. We had to use headlights and flashlights mid-day over here on Highway 199 because of the smoke and ash from this fire.

Be safe,
Mike

Thanks Derek and Dave. This fire has crossed the mountains into the Cave Juction and O’Brien areas of southern Oregon and came down Highway 199 here in Del Norte County in Northern California. We at Caltrans have had Highway 199 closed to northbound traffic all day. The fire is burning on both side of the Collier tunnel just south of the Oregon/California border.

The wind has changed direction and is now coming from the southwest.

It’s my understanding all the national forests of California have been closed to the general public as of yesterday afternoon.
