REASONABLY SIMPLE EXTERNAL SUCTION HOSE SPLICE

Post by Mythicalminer » Sun Nov 29, 2020 4:23 am

Occasionally, while dredging, I needed to add more suction hose so I didn't have to move the dredge... and of course, the most common way to splice suction hose is with a short piece of steel tubing inside the hose & clamped. This can be a pain... as it is sometimes hard to slip the steel tube inside the hose (without first boiling the hose to expand it)... and can be nearly impossible to take apart (without help).

AND, even worse, that steel tube inside the hose is a restriction forming a great place for a plug-up.

A few years ago I needed to add more 6" hose to my dredge... and found I could make an EXTERNAL SPLICE out of a piece of 8" stove pipe, and four large hose clamps.

To see how this works go to:

BTW: some have commented that this won't work as it will suck air due to the outer "threads" in the hose. The solution is to keep the splice underwater.... OR, if your hose is above water, wrap the ends of the splice with electrical or duct tape so air can't get in.
